Drosophila happens to be my favourite animal ever since I first started working with them in 2001.This tiny arthropod has solved many biological puzzles ,thanks to various researchers working on fruit fly all over the world.Initially the word genetics might be scary for beginners as it involves complicated crosses ,which again requires one to remember various genotypes, marker associated with balancers chromosomes and way to recognize them.But I can assure, with some proper guidance and will to learn makes understanding Drosophila Genetics interesting . Many books from various publishers related to fundamental aspects of Drosophila genetics and its development makes your job lot easier while learning. If you are or want to work with Drosophila its very important to understand genetics and Development , so these books might come handy.
1 ) Fly Pushing: The Theory and Practice of Drosophila Genetics
Written by Ralph J. Greenspan , is brilliant book for the beginners to get a feel of Drosophila.Majority of new fly workers use this as a guide to understand various aspects of fly genetics, as it is well written.This book covers all important aspects which one encounter while studying Genetics of fly.Hence makes it a must read for all beginners.
2) The Making of a Fly: The Genetics of Animal Design
Excellent book by an eminent scientist Peter A Lawrence. Making of Fly deals with complete Drosophila development with great details and in a simple manner. I can assure you that understanding different stages of Drosophila embryogeneis wont be much easier than reading Lawrence’s book.A perfect collection for your home library.
3) Drosophila: Methods and Protocols by Chritian Dahmann.
A very useful book for performing various experiments with flies.There are infact many books on similar lines available in Amazon stores and you can buy any other like Drosophila: A Practical Approach by D.B. Roberts ,which is also equally good.
