Evolution driven by changes in protein: Adaptive mutations in HoxA11 and evolution of pregnancy in mammals

Spatial and temporal regulation of genes or gene network is essential for proper development of an embryo. Any change in the gene regulation will lead into phenotypic novelty, either due to the change in function of the concerned protein or loss / gain of function in particular tissue. So to understand evolution of development is vital to decipher the origin and evolution of gene regulation and regulatory networks. Mutations affecting gene regulation can be either at the cis –regulatory elements (place where regulatory proteins bind to activate or repress …

Canadian science minister won’t say if he believes in evolution

Canada’s science minister, who is already in the center of the controversy over cuts in federal funding to researchers ,drew some more controversy when he refused to answer the question related to evolution. In an interview to “The Globe and Mail” Gary Goodyear, the federal Minister of State for Science and Technology, surprised everyone by saying :

Young dinosaurs roamed together, died together

A herd of young birdlike dinosaurs met their death on the muddy margins of a lake some 90 million years ago, according to a team of Chinese and American paleontologists that excavated the site in the Gobi Desert in western Inner Mongolia.
The Sudden sudden death of the herd in a mud trap provides a rare snapshot of social behavior. Composed entirely of juveniles of a single species of ornithomimid dinosaur (Sinornithomimus dongi), the herd suggests that immature individuals were left to fend for themselves when adults were preoccupied with nesting …

How to prepare Drosophila embryos for live cell imaging ?

Its no secret that GFP based time lapse live-imaging is a powerful technique for studying different dynamic processes like tissue morphogenesis ,cell death or cell adhesion. The important aspect which needs to be taken care for live cell imaging to minimize detrimental effects such as dehydration and hypoxia. Recently authors Bruce H. Reed, Stephanie C. McMillan, and Roopali Chaudhary reported a novel technique called hanging drop protocol. The main advantage using hanging drop protocol is that it results in excellent viability of embryos during live imaging and does not require …
