Post doc and Phd position in Drosophila developmental biology

The main aim of this postdoctoral positon is to study the molecular mechanisms responsible for transcriptional activation of the Drosophila embryo after egg fertilization. More specifically this work will involve the characterization of a previously isolated collection of mutants (Pimenta-Marques et al., 2008), identification and characterization of the mutants specifically defective for transcriptional activation, and functional characterization of the relevant gene(s). The goal is to better understand how is transcription initiated de novo in a spatially and temporally controlled manner after egg fertilization.

Ph.D. in Biology and equivalent. Preferential consideration will be given to candidates with previous experience with Drosophila melanogaster.

Net salary: €1.495.00/month; as a reference this is 3.5 times the Portuguese minimum salary.

Curriculum Vitae, contacts of previous supervisors, and a Letter of Motivation should be sent by mail or e-mail to the following address:

Application Period: From 1st December 2008 until 31st January 2009.

Phd Studentship :

Regulation of the Drosophila Cellular Immune Response by the Nucleokinesis Complex
Evidence is mounting that during attachment or encapsulation events leukocytes, platelets, and insect haemocytes use the same adhesion complexes as epithelial and neuronal cells. In mammalian neuronal cells a nucleokinesis complex regulates nuclear migration. There is mounting evidence that this same apparatus is important in regulating Drosophila circulating immunosurveillance cell (haemocyte) activity.

The key question of this study is to ask how the nucleokinesis complex regulates embryonic haemocyte migration.

Eligibility:

Fees will be paid at UK/EU rates only. Candidates must be UK citizens or EU citizens who have resided in the UK for three years, and should hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree or a Masters degree or an equivalent qualification

Commences October 2009
