How useful are animations in teaching?
Biology classrooms are not the same anymore ,since the advent of Internet teachers are using various formats like multimedia to put their thoughts across to students. The Web allows the incorporation of animation, moving pictures, and sound into lessons, which helps the students understand the subject better and rather in quick time. Everyone will agree with me that students will take more interest in learning when they see experiments in front of their eyes, see microorganisms up close, and use a mouse to navigate images.
“One of the advantages of using multimedia is to convey information quickly and effectively to all students – and keep them interested in learning (Savage and Vogel, 1996)”.
In this post i am trying to give some information about web sites which provide animations to better understand the principles of life.
Sites providing animations in Biology :
1)Animations describing some aspects of evolution : University of texas, Austin.
This webpage(Biology digital online) Biology digital online content also provides some excellent animations in other topics like Development, Genetics, physiology, ecology etc.
2) Another excellent site dedicated for the high school teachers is “Rediscovering Biology”
The Rediscovering Biology Web site is designed as a companion to the video series, providing content, activities, and resources to help viewers deepen and extend their understanding of new developments in the field of biology.
One can find the following units on this web page ( you can use the links to navigate )
Genomics
Proteins and Proteomics
Evolution and Phylogenetics
Microbial Diversity
Emerging Infectious Diseases
HIV and AIDS
Genetics of Development
Cell Biology and Cancer
Human Evolution
Neurobiology
Biology of Sex and Gender
Biodiversity
Genetically Modified Organisms
3) Howard Hughes medical institute biointeractive page: This page has got some great lectures by Sean B. Carroll ,David Kingsley and Ken Miller.
4) PBS evolution page is an excellent resource for learning A-Z about evolution.
5) Teaching effectively with multimedia
Hope you find the information provided here informative and please share with me ,if you come across some other informative animation pages about evolution or Biology in general.
