Are they serious to close it? I really admire the works of Pr. Martindale on evo-devo and deep phylogeny!
I am getting my PhD next March, and actually thinking to ask for a possibility to work as a posdoc at his lab ..... *sigh*

Is the decision to demolish the lab REALLY final?!

Thanks for bringing attention to the pathetic closing of one of the greatest marine labs in the US. When I was a PhD student at Harvard I did most of my research at Kewalo since the lab was not only more equipped for molecular studies of marine life than my Harvard lab, but the professors and post-docs drawn to Kewalo are of the highest caliber. Unlike many other marine labs that harbor outdated research, what goes on at Kewalo is state of the art. And there's the Nature and Science publications to prove it. Not only will UH be making an economic error in allowing the destruction of this phenomenal place, but biology as a whole takes a great step back. Understanding how organisms -- the great majority of them being marine-- evolve and develop impacts every scientific field, including medicine.
