Annelids on a roll- Part II
Let’s move on in Annelid series which i started few days back ( Annelids on a roll- Part I) talking about the emergence of annelids as a model system for evo devo studies.We will briefly look into the two articles published in BMC evolutionary biology and Developmental Biology journals.
First one from Detlev Detlev Arendt and Michel Vervoort dealing about evolution of neural basic-Helix-Loop-Helix genes by studying the role of achaete scute complex genes in neurogeneis of Platynereis dumerilii .The authors show that the neurogeneis situation in annelids are similar to the one in vertebrates based on analysis that the Platynereis bHLH genes have both proneural and neuronal specification functions.They claim that these features are ancestral to bilateraians and are conserved in vertebrates and annelids,which are divereged on the case of Drosophila in course of evolution.

Second atricle in the series belongs to Notch signaling in other famous annelid called as capitella.In this work they focused on the role of notch signalling in segmentaion of annelids.Notch pathway is known for its pivotal role in segmentation in Vertebrates and Arthropods (shown for the first time in Spider by Wim damen group).Katrin Thamm and Elaine C. Seaver shown the expression pattern of capitella Notch pathway orthologs like Notch,delta and hes during larval and adult stages which correlates to zones of rapid cell proliferation.
